Tommy Chong is one of the most recognized names in bud. As an activist, actor, musician, and humorist, Chong has long championed the pleasures & benefits of bud.
Born in 1938 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Chong started his entertainment career as a guitarist. In the mid-1960s, he was part of the band Bobby Taylor & the Vancouvers. They were a Motown act, and Tommy Chong wrote a song “Does Your Mama Know About Me” that charted at 29 on the Billboard hot 100. In 1967 Tommy Chong performed guitar live with Jimi Hendrix on bass during a tour in England.
Later, Chong migrated to California where he joined the vanguard of bud culture.
Joining up with Richard “Cheech” Marin in the early 1970s, Cheech & Chong was one of the few enduring comedy duos from the 20th century. Their improvised stoner antics held a mirror up to psychedelic culture, and Latino culture in Los Angeles. Cheech & Chong’s albums were best-selling, Grammy-awarded legends. Cheech & Chong went on to write and and star in 1978’s Up in Smoke, kicking off a series of popular comedy features and pioneering the stoner film. Cheech & Chong’s film collaborations include Cheech & Chong’s Next Movie in 1980, Nice Dreams in 1981, Things are Tough All Over in 1982, and Still Smokin’ in 1983. The Corsican Brothers expanded their range beyond pot into swashbuckling, and in 2014 they collaborated on an animated feature film Cheech & Chong’s Animated Movie.
In a 2020 interview, Chong reflected on his bud use “It was my job as a writer and performer to deliver the goods. So if that meant being stoned, I gladly did it. I found that the more stoned I was, the more crazy the movie was, and the more successful we were.”
Chong went on to act, dance, write, and perform in a wide range of roles. But he has always been known as a proud pot smoker. Tommy Chong is hero to stoners, and a target for rearguard forces opposed to legal bud. In 2003, Chong ended up as a casualty of the drug war, serving a nine month prison sentence for running a glass pipe shop on the internet. During Tommy Chong’s time in prison, he worked on his memoir The I Chong: Meditations from the Joint. His work inspired his cellmate Jordan Belfort to write The Wolf of Wall Street.
Tommy Chong is a creative force and a deep bud lover who has lived several lifetimes in popular public life. As a survivor of cancer, Tommy is familiar with both the recreational and the medical uses of bud.
Says Tommy: “My goal is to get bud recognized by the American Medical Association as a viable medicine for various ailments including Epilepsy, Alzheimer, M.S. and Cancer and who knows what else.”
