You know that idea for a movie you had, right after you smoked a Grape Lollipop preroll, and before you got distracted and started making a casserole out of stale Pringles, mozzarella, and Sriracha? Well, dust off that half-finished, grease-spattered film treatment and light up another joint, because your dream of seeing it on the big screen can finally become a reality, thanks to the new “by stoners, for stoners” SPLIFF Film Festival, coming to San Francisco next year.
SPLIFF Film Festival is the weed-themed offspring of HUMP—the sex-positive amateur porn festival spearheaded by Dan Savage, celebrated advice columnist, activist, and author who has made huge strides normalizing and celebrating human sexuality. Notably, Savage and his husband, Terry Miller, began the It Gets Better Project in 2010, as a way to reach out to struggling LGBTQ+ youth. The project eventually received an Emmy Award for "strategically, creatively, and powerfully utilizing the media to educate and inspire.”
Cannabis Films in San Francisco
It seems that Savage has extended his purview to educating and inspiring around the use of cannabis (which he has long been an advocate for). Could Savage be about to do for weed what he’s done for sex?
From the website: “The SPLIFF Film Festival is where filmmakers, artists, animators, and potheads will share original film shorts exploring stoner themes. From serious takes on pot culture to half-baked comedy to mind-blowing weirdness—they will all have a home at SPLIFF!” All films are limited to a maximum length of 4 minutes and 20 seconds—a length which, according to Caroline Dodge, Marketing and Promotions Director for the festival, helps make for a fun event. “If you don’t see something that floats your boat,” she says, “just wait. You will in a minute.”
So, get fired up! You have until March of next year to perfect and submit your film. Prizes will be awarded to the entries deemed trippiest, funniest, and stupidest, as well as a best in show. Learn more about requirements for entry at the official website, SPLIFFfilmfest.com.
